Pothole Ratings Map Launched

Government pothole repair ratings published – West Berkshire scores “green”

The government has published a new national red / amber / green rating system intended to show how effectively councils maintain local roads and repair potholes.

The ratings, announced today and reported nationally by the BBC here, are presented via an interactive map covering England.

How West Berkshire is rated

Under the new system, West Berkshire Council is rated green.

As the government site explains, green does not mean there are no potholes or defects. Instead, it reflects factors such as focus on repairs, how quickly defects are addressed, and overall efficiency.

West Berkshire sits close to Hampshire and Wokingham, and not far from Reading — all of which are rated amber under the same criteria.

What does “green” mean?

The ratings are calculated using a set of national indicators, including:

– how much a council spends on highway maintenance
– the proportion of roads in poor condition
– how quickly defects are inspected and repaired
– how effectively funding is prioritised

The system is designed to measure relative performance, rather than the absence of potholes. The full methodology — including the thresholds for red, amber and green — is published by the UK Government here:

Potholes still exist — even in a “green” area

A green classification does not mean:

– every reported pothole has already been fixed
– rural or lightly-used roads are problem-free
– weather damage will not create new defects

Residents are encouraged to continue reporting road defects so they can be assessed and prioritised. Potholes that are not reported are less likely to appear in inspection records or performance metrics.

Report a pothole:
– West Berkshire
– Hampshire
– Wokingham
– Reading
