Work on the new pedestrian crossing at Three Firs roundabout has now been completed.
The crossing has a central refuge island, improved sight lines and new signage, allowing pedestrians to cross the road in two stages. It provides the highway connection between Burghfield Common and the new multi-user route being developed between Burghfield and Mortimer.
The crossing forms part of West Berkshire Council's 2026/27 active travel programme, which includes highway works associated with the Mortimer–Burghfield route.
West Berkshire Council has delivered the crossing at Three Firs, while Stratfield Mortimer Parish Council is responsible for the separate sections of the route through the common and wooded areas towards Mortimer.
Stratfield Mortimer Parish Council has reported that a schedule of works has now been agreed for the remaining section near 5 Oaken Cottage.
Work is due to begin on Wednesday 2 September. This will provide a tarmac path alongside the road towards Longmoor Lane, before continuing through the wooded area to the crossing point and joining the existing section towards College Piece.
The Parish Council expects the work to continue into the second week of October. Temporary traffic lights will be needed while some of the roadside work is carried out, currently expected during the first two weeks of October.
Once this final section is completed, there should be a continuous multi-user route between Mortimer and Burghfield Common for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
The Three Firs installation itself is a pedestrian crossing. Cyclists may also choose to use the crossing, while the wider route is intended for walking, cycling and horse riding.
