West Berkshire Council has confirmed that work on a new pedestrian crossing at the Three Firs roundabout is due to begin on Monday 17 August 2026.
The highway scheme will provide staggered dropped crossings and a central refuge island, allowing pedestrians to cross the junction in two stages. It will also include short sections of new or improved footway, new signs, pedestrian guardrails and some vegetation cutting back.
West Berkshire Council is delivering the highway crossing element, while Stratfield Mortimer Parish Council is responsible for the separate footpath through the common and wooded areas between Mortimer and Burghfield Common. The new crossing is intended to connect with that path.
Work is expected to last for around two weeks, with an estimated completion date of Friday 28 August. This may change if there is poor weather or unforeseen difficulty during construction.
Temporary traffic signals will be required 24 hours a day while the work is taking place. A temporary pedestrian route will also be provided.
Vehicular access to some nearby properties may be restricted for short periods while the new kerb line and footway are constructed. The contractor will give affected residents more precise dates and times once work is under way.
